 The poem was enclosed with a letter to Higginson dated December 1872 (L381). There is an earlier manuscript, with many variations, which evidently served as a "draft" for the text later sent to Higginson. I reproduce it in the reconstruction by Johnson and Franklin with the translation of the variants not used in the final text alongside. Scarf format: 135x31 cm
 Certainly unflattering portrait of some self-assured preacher, narrow when he speaks of breadth and false when he speaks of truth. The yardstick is "the innocent Jesus", an attribute very distant from that series of adjectives that in the last verse of the preparatory copy ED seems to pile one on top of the other, as if he were unable to decide the most suitable to represent those who believe he is having the truth in your pocket, without doubts of any kind and without the humility of feeling small in the face of the immensity of the mystery.
 The printing of the scarves is carried out with natural water-based dyes that do not contain toxic substances harmful to the environment.
 The technique used for printing on synthetic fabrics is "Dye Sublimation", which allows the dyes to penetrate deeply into the fibers of the fabric ensuring a brilliant and luminous yield that does not fade even after many washes.
